The Basics of Caring for a Leather Jacket

Even though leather is a tough material, it still needs care. Luckily for you, leather jackets are easy to clean and get a shinny look just after a few scrubs. If you were to fall in mud, it would be easier to clean it off the jacket, than your clothes. Moreover, these jackets can withstand thorns and twigs whereas the same would rip your other clothes apart. Their benefits are countless, so you may want to hold on to your leather jacket for at least a few years. Finding a good jacket that suits your style isn’t easy, so it’s better to hang on to one than keep changing it every few months.

Before experimenting on your own and taking chances with your jacket, it is better to take the help of a professional. You can do that by reading the manufacturer’s instructions on how to care for the Rip wheeler yellowstone black jacket and the best product to use on it. Even though it is recommended to send the jacket to a leather-cleaning specialist once a year, here are some general tips on how to care for your jacket:

– First of all, remove any salt deposits or stains as soon as possible. You can do that by washing off the stains. A stain protector should then be applied to prevent future water spots and stains. Afterwards, spray the jacket with an odorless and colorless aerosol protective spray to prevent any damage.

– Use lukewarm water for washing the jacket. Some color will eventually come out, so don’t panic. However, avoid using hot water as it causes more color to stream out and causes extreme shrinkage. Rub the leather against itself and make sure all parts of the jacket are soaked for five to ten minutes.

– After washing the jacket, you have to dry it. Wipe the leather with a damp sponge and allow the jacket to naturally air dry. Avoid blow dryers, heat vents or other heat sources during drying. However, in case the jacket becomes dry or cracked, you should condition it.

– Hanging the jacket on wide, padded hangers is best for maintaining the leather’s shape and forcing wrinkles to drop naturally. The length of the hanger and jacket’s shoulder should be equal. If the hanger is longer, it will ruin the shape of the jacket’s shoulders and sleeves. If it is shorter than the shoulder’s length, it will leave two edges poking out on the jacket’s shoulders.

– After the jacket is dry, store it in a breathable garment bag. Don’t let it stay in a plastic dry cleaning or storage bag for extended periods of time.
